With easy access to the Mediterranean coastal motorway on the outskirts
of town, Oliva is only 45 minutes drive from Valencia and an hour from Alicante.
Both cities are served by major international airports.
Regular buses go to both Valencia and Alicante and plans are well advanced
to extend the trainline to Oliva from Gandia in the north and Denia in the
south. Gandia, the ancestral home of the Borja family is 7 kilometres from
Oliva. Two trains an hour travel between Gandia and Valencia - journey time
is 50 minutes. The popular holiday resort of Denia lies 20 kilometres down
the coast from Oliva. From Denia there is a train service to Alicante and
ferries to Ibiza and Majorca.
Oliva is a working town. According to the last census (2005), the population
of Oliva and the municipal district is 25.318. The local economy is agriculture
based, mainly orange growing, but a variety of high quality vegetables are
also grown locally. The fresh produce can be bought at the bustling street
market that takes place every Friday morning. There is also an indoor market
that is open everyday.
Industry in Oliva is mainly dedicated to the firing of traditional clay
building materials - bricks, roof tiles, floor tiles etc.

The house is in the 'Raval' - the moorish quarter of the old town, centred
around the church of San Roque, where pretty cobbled lanes wind among the
whitewashed townhouses. Within 1 minutes walk from the house there is a
butchers, a bakers and a well stocked grocery as well as a couple of bars.
The house is five minutes walk from the Paseo, in the modern part of Oliva,
a tree lined boulevard flanked by a strip of restaurants, bars, shops and
supermarkets and other local amenities such as the health centre, schools,
post office and banks.
The house is 1 kilometre from Oliva's long, 10 kilometre stretch of unspoilt, natural beaches. Oliva's golden, sandy beaches are among the best on Spain's Mediterranean coastline. The beaches are unique in that they are flanked by sand dunes, reaching a height of 7 metres and width of 40 metres. The dunes have created a special eco system which provides a natural habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal life, beautiful wild flowers and architectural yuccas grow and survive in the dry sand of the dunes. Thanks to strict local planning controls the beachfront has been protected from the high rise concrete developments which blight much of the Mediterranean coast.
There are a number of beachfront restaurants dotted along this stretch
of coast and temporary wooden beach bars are set up in the summer months.
Equipment for a variety of watersports including sailing, windsurfing, kite
boarding and sea kayaking is available to rent on the beach.

The complex is used by many top flight northern european football teams
for winter training breaks.

Between the town of Oliva and the Segaria and Mustalla mountains, 4 kilometres
from the house, lies Europe's biggest subterranean lake - The Marjal - 1,000
hectares of wetland which has been designated a protected reserve. Rice
is cultivated here in huge paddy fields which, together with the abundance
of water, is a magnet for storks, ducks, moorhens and many species of migratory
birds.
And for those wanting to swim in a natural pool, Font Salada is a spring
where it is possible to bathe all year round since the waters remain at
the same temperature during the year. Its healthy waters have been known
traditionally as being beneficial for dermatological illnesses.
Oliva, like many other Spanish towns celebrates many fiestas and holidays
throughout the year with fireworks, music, processions and entertainment.
In March, the Fallas fiesta is celebrated. This is an important event which
is unique to the Valencia region. Huge, beautifully sculptured figures are
displayed during the week in various sites throughout the town and on the
last night they are judged and then burned one by one with the winner being
the last to go. The people of the town celebrate with various processions
and bands and on the night of the Crema (the burning) crowds gather to watch
the spectacular sight as they go up in flames one by one.
Easter is another very important event and during the Holy Week there are
processions through the Raval district. There are also processions that
circle the house for the Cruces de Mayo San Roque fiestas in early May.
In June the people of Oliva celebrate the fiesta of San Juan by lighting
fires and having barbeques on the beach. As far as the eye can see the beach
is alight with bonfires. Midnight is marked by everyone going into the sea
and jumping the waves, this is supposed to bring good fortune for the coming
year.
The town's most colourful fiesta is the Moors and Christians which takes
place in July. Various processions and firework displays take place over
the course of a weekend.
Valencia, Spain's third largest city has seen it's profile rise in recent
years thanks to the stunning City of Arts and Sciences, hosting the America's
Cup and the European Formula One Grand Prix. Valencia also has a beautiful
historic district and great shopping. It is an easy drive or bus journey
from Oliva or you can use the regular train service from nearby Gandia.
